Adoration

Black and purple vertical gradient 1 watermark

Gradients will always be my first nail art love. One of The Nailasarus‘s beautiful gradient manicures was the first nail art I really fell hard for and felt like I just had to try myself, and from that point on, I was hooked. As I’ve experimented with gradients more during the last year, I’ve found that I especially love them when they’re done with holographic polishes: something about all that sparkle transitioning from one color to the other just really works for me. Add in my favorite colors (purple and black) and my favorite polish brands (piCture pOlish and a england), and you’ve got a gradient I just can’t help but adore!

To get this look, I started with a base of piCture pOlish Hussy and then sponged on a gradient using Hussy and a england Bridal Veil with a makeup wedge. It was actually my husband’s idea to do the gradient vertically and alternate the color order on each nail, and I really love the effect. It’s almost like the gradient runs in both directions at once, which is pretty genius, I think. Thanks, honey!

Reinvention

In the end, I went with a stamp/freehand hybrid technique to make my fire and phoenix come to life. I started with a base of Sephora by OPI Never Enough Shoes on all my nails, and then stamped an image of flames from the Messy Mansion MM27 plate using white stamping polish from the Born Pretty Store. Then, using a small detail brush, I added color to the flames on top of the white using Julep Nadia, Julep Marjorie, Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Red My Lips, and Julep Brenda, in that order.

I mentioned that this manicure was outside my comfort zone, but that’s probably a bit of an understatement! Between the stamping and freehanding the colors, I felt very, very challenged by all the techniques I used here. Overall, it didn’t turn out quite as neatly as I’d have liked, but from a normal viewing distance it looks okay, so I’m focusing on that. And, more importantly, I came up with an idea and found a way to execute it, which definitely makes me proud!

On my middle and ring nails, I started with a base of OPI This Gown Needs A Crown, and on my outer nails I used the textured OPI It’s Frosty Outside. Then, I taped off my nails and painted with Essie Licorice.

Daisies

For these I started off with a base of MASH – Black, then I used acrylic paint for the white flowers and dots, and then I used Butter LONDON – Jasper for the yellow centres of the flowers, all topped off with a coat of Seche Vite.

Interlocking dots cult nails tempest nevermore 4

For the white and black polishes I used Cult Nails Tempest and Nevermore. You will definitely be seeing a lot of Tempest and Nevermore this week! I can’t help but use them over and over again because they are both so opaque and have great formulas.

This was my first time trying this interlocking pattern!! It’s easy in concept, but I must admit I struggled a little with placement – especially the really important first step where the lines cross. It looks really nice from far away (far away meaning arm’s length, i.e. the usual distance my hand is from my eyeballs), but I feel like there are so many glaring flaws in these up close and personal macro photos :-/ Oh well, another excuse for me to practice using dots, huzzah!

Girly Bits Gravedigger is a black jelly loaded with multi-sized hexes, dots, and squares in orange, fuchsia, purple, and green.  The formula was smooth and easy to apply.  I love how nicely the glitters sparkle through the jelly!! Shown is three coats of Gravedigger.

Grayscale Explosion

I used Wet N Wild Wild Shine French White and Wet N Wild Wild Shine Black Creme for this manicure.  I started with a base of Black Creme and then mixed the black and white polishes to create three different shades of gray, creating “explosion bursts” with each one.  I finished off my concentric explosions with French White.  I sealed everything in with Glisten & Glow HK Girl top coat.  I free handed this, but if you’re really ambitious and ultra-patient you could tape it.

Black and White

Digital dozen black white nail art flowers dots 003

This month’s theme is Black and White and was chosen by Missy.   Gggggrrrr black and white.  Where’s all the colour??  Initally I hated this theme, but actually, in the end, I like every mani I’ve done, partly because it’s put the focus on the art and the pattern, and not the colours.

Bang bang

Fireworks nail art 2

I started with a base of w7 Black, which is my favourite black creme, and added a glitter gradient to make it look like fireworks in the night sky. From thumb to pinkie the colours are Sparkler, Catherine Wheel, Rocket, Roman Candle and Banger

Elf gina girl

And here is Gina Girl, a black sheer jelly packed with lots of different size hex glitter. The main color of the glitter is purple. But I also spot gold, green and even pink. What a great combo! I layered one coat (slightly dabbed) of Gina Girl over a black base without additional top coat:
