Planner

Erin Condren Planner Inspired Nail Art 1

To get this look: I decided to stay true to the design of the planner and the colours used. Since the background is not black, but more of a slate grey. I started with a base of one coat of Cult Nails Fetish, and one coat of Essie Cashmere Bathrobe (I don’t own a dark slate grey, otherwise I would have used that).

The next step was to paint where my design would go, and block it out using Cult Nails Tempest (an opaque white). This would allow for the colours to show up more.

I then painted in the design with my colour: Nubar My New Obsession (blue), Sally Hansen Lightening (yellow), Nubar On The Radar (red), Models Own Soda Pop Pink, OPI My Vampire is Buff, Misa Lime Love, and for the brown/nude a mix of Models Own Nude Beige and Essie Cashmere Bathrobe.

Leaping leopards

I started off with a base of OPI My Vampire Is Buff and did the leopard print in Essie Where’s My Chauffeur? and Wet N Wild Wild Shine Red Red.  I sealed everything in with Glisten & Glow HK Girl top coat.

Poisonous Dots Nail Art

Poisonous Dots 3

I dotted on various size dots in Barry M Acid Yellow and China Glaze Pink Voltage, but didn’t seal with a top coat, so the dotty texture would remain. I love it! Most fun nails I’ve worn in ages!

The artwork  was done using white acrylic paint, China Glaze Sunshine Pop, Kleancolor Neon Orange, NYX Between Mauve and Purple, Kleancolor Neon Purple, Sinful Colors Innocent, Sinful Colors Why Not, Spoiled Permission to Proceed, and NYC Greenwich Village. The background was a gradient done using Kleancolor Metallic Aqua, Metallic Sapphire, and Metallic Fuchsia.

I used: Sally Hansen Pacific Blue, Misa Blue Jade Vine, Misa Loveliest of Lilacs, CoverGirl Wine to Five, Sally Hansen Going Green

TIP: If you are having trouble with this design, try using acrylic paint instead of nail polish! It is easier to handle and doesn’t dry out as quickly. Just be sure to put down a coat of nail polish first and finish the design with topcoat.

Amazingly gorgeous

I went with a base of OPI Miss You-Niverse, which is a gorgeous dark eggplant creme that I reviewed here. Then, I took Essie Good As Gold and with just a tiny bit of polish on the brush, swiped it upwards from the tip of my nails. Doing this also left little flecks on the rest of the nail, which are barely visible in the photos but had a nice effect in the light.

Autumn

Autumn leaf nail art

Lately Cottonconey has become one of my Instagram obsessions. I’m in love with her freehand nail art for the intricate designs and attention to detail. I love this fall leaf design for its abstractness, also it has a whimsical quality to it. “I used picturepolish ‘nude’ as my base and painted the black outline with acrylic paint. I colored them in with watered down acrylic ink.”

The season

My base polishes are the two shades in the Morgan Taylor Halloween Collection. The set includes Little Black Dress (a great black!) and a crazy bright orange called Orange Crush. I used a fine art brush to create the jack-o-lanterns, skulls, spiders and bats and teeny dotting tools to make the dots.

I also introduced a new light source and used a different lens for these pics. Why? Because I’m never satisfied and always tinkering with my setup. I’m not sure if I like it. We’ll see!

Anyway, the polishes I used in this look are:

Flag it

 IMG 5638 copy

… today’s prompt is “inspired by a flag.” I am from the United States, but I have been seeing the United Kingdom’s Union Jack flag everywhere lately, so I decided to incorporate it into a skittle manicure using some OPI colors.

I decided to go with a funkier color scheme, instead of primary red, white and blue colors. The base color of the flag is OPI My Vampire is Buff, and I painted over it with OPI Casino Royale (which is also on my index finger) and OPI I Saw… U Saw… We Saw… Warsaw! The textured polish on my alternating fingers is OPI Get Your Number.

Mosaic

I used polishes from Kiss Products: Kiss Nail Artist Paint and Stencil Kit, Kiss Nail Artist Paints and Tip Guides. Each set comes with three different shades of stripers that worked perfectly for this design. I was actually impressed with how easy they were to work with and how saturated the colors are. The kits also include stencils and tape that I haven’t used yet. This design is all freehanded.

Striped Nails

Ombre yellow stripe nails step up nail art 3

Something I’ve been making a conscious effort to improve on with my nail art for 2014 is tri-fold – 1.) using colors I don’t use as frequently (i.e. yellow, like today, and pink, etc.) 2.) using more exciting polish finishes (I’m sort of a die-hard creme + glitter topper thru and thru, most likely because cremes don’t make me cry when I’m trying to clean up ’round the edges) and 3.) keep on keeping on with freehand stuff (i.e. get better) Luckily for me, and maybe for you if you like adorably wonky freehand stripes and yellow nail polish, I’ve actually been remembering these 3 goals this week for MONOCHROME week! Today I present these ‘lovingly freehanded ombre striped nails).
