Black and White with Glit...

Day07 02

I used W7 Cosmic Black – a black jelly packed with Silver glitter – as a base. Then I took a sponge and used it to apply W7 Cosmic Mauve from the tips. Then I added some Wet n Wild White to the mix but because it’s not very opaque, it gave it a milky look. Finally I used a little more Cosmic Mauve right on the tips and used about 3 coats of NYC Top Coat to smooth things over!

Liquid Crystal Tips

I want to declare my love to Crushed Velvet from Diamond Cosmetics. It’s my fav dark purple creme, so smooth and dreamy… I love it to pieces! And with China Glaze – Liquid Crystal sponged on the tips I love it even more.

Apply a second coat of the glitter nail polish, this time starting halfway down the nail (roughly somewhere in between where the glitter color and the opaque color started) and going all the way to the tip. This will blend the glitter and the silver tips and help create a gradient effect.

Brrr…

Pretty & Polished Hybrid is a pale blue shimmer thermal that shifts to medium blue and then to purple when cold.  The formula was smooth and very easy to apply.  I absolutely love the triple shift in this one!   Shown is two coats of Hybrid.

Gradient Concert

Back in July, I went to two concerts back-to-back, a One Direction and a Jonas Brothers concert. I was a bit unsure of what mani to wear since I didn’t have time to do a 1D mani and a JB mani (since the concerts were back-to-back). So, I pulled out the customized polish that I ordered from Shimmer Polish. Cindy helped create a beautiful peach, gold, and black polish that I customized for my friend Anouk. Ironically, Anouk and I met through Jonas Brothers and she actually introduced me to One Direction .. so what better polish to use, right? :D

Newsprint

I am SO pleasantly surprised with how easy newspaper nails are to do! They seem sort of UN-mess-up-able since they’re a little grungy anyway. The only thing I wish I could have done differently with this manicure would be to move all the base gradients down one nail – i.e. have my ring finger gradient be the darkest one on my whole hand since you can still see the newsprint fairly well over it, but it’s mostly impossible over my pinkie gradient nail >.<

Ombre Gradient Nails

I used Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear polishes in Sun Kissed and Green With Envy. I applied them following this tutorial. I sponged the colours on twice today which has given better results than last time – I think the graduation is more subtle and there’s less evidence that I even used a sponge because you can’t see so many sponge marks like last time!

Striped Nails

Something I’ve been making a conscious effort to improve on with my nail art for 2014 is tri-fold – 1.) using colors I don’t use as frequently (i.e. yellow, like today, and pink, etc.) 2.) using more exciting polish finishes (I’m sort of a die-hard creme + glitter topper thru and thru, most likely because cremes don’t make me cry when I’m trying to clean up ’round the edges) and 3.) keep on keeping on with freehand stuff (i.e. get better) Luckily for me, and maybe for you if you like adorably wonky freehand stripes and yellow nail polish, I’ve actually been remembering these 3 goals this week for MONOCHROME week! Today I present these ‘lovingly freehanded ombre striped nails).

Acrylic application is actually a lot about the size brush you use. The brush sizes vary, usually in increments of 2. So 2, 4, 6, 8, 24! I’ve never seen a size 24 brush in person, but searching online has revealed that they do exist. Has anyone used that size? I’d love to get some nail tech chatter going about the preferred size, manufacturer, and shape of brush to apply acrylics!

Mastering acrylics hasn’t come to me yet. I imagine it will take lots of practice! I have laid a set on a friend in the salon though, and so far, they’re holding up! It’s been about a week. Here’s what they looked like after application and polishing was complete:

Fendi-inspired

Fendi 4

Ombré hair just recently had it’s moment (I just can’t seem to part with my ombréd dark blue locks), but has ombréd nails? I think not. This Fendi-inspired Ladyfinger is definitely a challenge, but the end result is totally worth it.
